I started playing EverQuest back in 1999 before Kunark came out and my first real character was a half elf paladin. The server I started on was Tallon Zek but the server I ended on was Innoruuk... although I think it's Erollisi Marr now.
I have absolutely no programming experience. I Googled "how to create your own EverQuest Emulator server" and kind of went from there. Everything I've learned during this process I learned by a combination of doing and the kind people on the EQEmu forums.
My goal with this server is to create an updated version of Classic EverQuest. I want to incorporate zones on the classic map, expand race/class combos, and introduce new fun elements to the game. I've played World of Warcraft and dabbled in other MMORPG's and am trying to combine everything that I enjoyed into this server. Hopefully your time here will be an enjoyable one.

Bear in mind I am the only developer right now on this server and I work full time and also have other side projects. Development might be slow, but hell, it's free so you get what you don't pay for.
